Bringing Back 7th Street
This 9500 sf., mixed-use project will serve as a catalyst in re-establishing the 7th street corridor as the center of Black-owned business and arts in Oakland, CA. It will continue to honor the legacy of Esther Mabry and cement her contribution to the local community. Esther’s Orbit Room was a popular jazz club and hub during the cultural scene of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s when Black-owned businesses blossomed in Oakland. Keeping this in mind, Esther’s Orbit Room Revitalization Project will feature a restaurant, live music, and bar. The Orbit Room will be enhanced with an open entry courtyard connecting Esther’s Orbit Room to an art gallery, cafe, and movement studio. The project is intended to be in service to, and foster community for the surrounding neighborhood. In addition, 3 artists’ residences are proposed at the upper level. These light filled, airy lofts will serve as a backdrop for artists to create and imagine.
